Eid celebrations marred by gunfire in Philadelphia

Eid festivities in Pennsylvania turned grim as gunfire erupted at Clara Muhammad Square park in Philadelphia, where about 1,000 people gathered to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.

No fatalities were reported, but three injuries occurred in the exchange of approximately 30 rounds between two groups. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stated that a 15-year-old armed with an assault rifle was among the wounded, engaged by an on-duty officer.

The teenager is stable in the hospital, and authorities don’t link the incident to Eid. Five individuals, including the teenager, were detained, and five weapons were seized. The Muslim community expresses concern amidst rising Islamophobia.

Attendee Najah Bey lamented the violence, while Mayor Cherelle L Parker pledged support for the Muslim community’s right to worship peacefully. She condemned the violence on social media, emphasizing the need for unity and peaceful coexistence.
