Pakistan urges UN to address grave situation in Palestine

During the Tenth Emergency Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Palestine, Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, delivered a passionate statement calling for urgent action to address the ongoing crisis in the region.

In his address, Ambassador Akram expressed Pakistan’s full support for the draft resolution submitted by the UAE on behalf of the co-sponsors, aimed at addressing the grave situation in Palestine. He emphasized that Pakistan did not co-sponsor the draft initially, at the request of the State of Palestine, in order to maintain flexibility in responding to potential adverse amendments.

The ambassador highlighted the severity of the situation, describing it as one of the gravest violations of the principles of the UN Charter since the Second World War. He condemned the actions of the Israeli regime, accusing it of committing crimes and atrocities against innocent civilians in Gaza.

Akram criticized Israel’s refusal to heed calls for an immediate ceasefire, despite international pleas, and warned of the dire consequences of its ongoing assault on Rafah. He stressed the need for accountability for the crimes being perpetrated in Palestine, asserting that Israel would eventually be held responsible.

Furthermore, Ambassador Akram denounced insults directed at the UN and its member states by the Israeli representative, labeling them as arrogance and reflecting the impunity of the occupier. He called on the General Assembly to appropriately respond to such behavior.

The ambassador urged the General Assembly to take a decisive step towards rectifying the historic injustice against the Palestinian people by admitting Palestine as a full member of the UN. He emphasized that Palestine meets all the criteria for membership and enjoys broad support from UN member states.

Akram criticized the notion that Palestine’s admission should only occur through negotiations, arguing that negotiations must take place on a level playing field. He called for the adoption of the draft resolution, which would affirm Palestine’s qualification for membership and urge the Security Council to endorse its admission.

Ambassador Munir Akram asserted that the adoption of the resolution would be a crucial step towards addressing the longstanding injustice against the Palestinian people and reviving the peace process. He reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for Palestine and thanked the General Assembly for its attention to this critical issue.
