Shah Rukh Khan offers Gambhir blank check to stay with KKR for 10 years

Amid swirling reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached Australian cricket legends like Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer. Both Ponting and Langer have reportedly declined offers to coach the Indian team until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has denied that such offers were made.

With Rahul Dravid’s tenure set to end after the 2024 T20 World Cup, the BCCI faces uncertainty about who will step into the high-profile role of head coach. Notably, Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the leading candidate, with the application deadline for the position looming on May 27.

Gambhir, a distinguished former cricketer and the only prominent Indian name circulating for the role, is seen as the frontrunner. Jay Shah recently emphasized the board’s preference for an Indian coach, stating, “It’s crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level.”

Gambhir’s impressive record as a team mentor in the Indian Premier League (IPL) bolsters his candidacy. Under his guidance, the Lucknow Super Giants made the playoffs and finished third in consecutive seasons. In 2024, Gambhir joined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor, leading the team to the top of the league stage and securing a spot in the finals.

According to a report by Dainik Jagran, Gambhir was approached by the BCCI to apply for the head coach position and has expressed strong interest. He is expected to meet BCCI officials in Chennai during the IPL 2024 final between KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although Gambhir has not yet submitted his application, he is anticipated to do so soon, which would likely make him the official successor to Dravid.

However, Gambhir faces a potential conflict, needing to discuss his future with KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, who played a significant role in bringing him back to Kolkata. Reportedly, Khan has offered Gambhir a long-term role with the team, providing a blank check to secure his commitment.

CrickIt has not independently verified this story and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Attempts to reach Gambhir for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
