Patient dies after Mianwali hospital staff lock him up for VIP visit

Mianwali: On Thursday, a decomposed body of an elderly man was discovered in a locked storeroom at the District Headquarter Hospital.

According to reports, in February, Rescue 1122 personnel had brought an elderly man with a fractured leg to the DHQ Hospital following an accident in the Isakhel tehsil.

Identified as Mohammad Ali, son of Mohammad Asif, the injured man was admitted to the general ward and began receiving treatment.

During his hospital stay, Mohammad Ali received no visitors. It was revealed that he was mentally challenged and had difficulty speaking. Due to complaints from other patients about his behavior, he was moved to a side room.

Recently, the Punjab health secretary visited the hospital. Concerned about potential disturbances during the secretary’s visit, some hospital staff moved Mohammad Ali from the side room to a vacant storeroom and locked the door, intending to release him after the visit. However, they forgot to do so.

Days later, a foul odour spread through the hospital, prompting an investigation. When staff members unlocked the storeroom, they discovered the decomposed body lying on the ground.

Mianwali Deputy Commissioner Khalid Javed Gorayia immediately visited the DHQ Hospital upon learning about the incident and ordered an inquiry. An inquiry committee, led by DHO (HR) Dr. Rafiqe Khan, was appointed to investigate the matter.

The autopsy report is awaited to determine the exact cause of death, and the hospital administration buried the body as that of an unknown person.
