Samar Khan becomes first Pakistani woman to snowboard Europe’s highest peak

Samar Khan, an intrepid adventurer from Pakistan, has made history by conquering Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak, and descending its formidable slopes on a snowboard.

Hailing from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dir district, Samar achieved this feat at 10 am local time, proudly raising Pakistan’s flag atop the 5,642-meter summit. Her accomplishment marks her as the first Pakistani woman to achieve such a milestone in the realm of adventure sports.

Taking to Instagram to share her triumph, Samar expressed her joy, stating, “I’m pleased to announce that I have successfully climbed Europe’s highest peak, Mt. Elbrus, and snowboarded down, becoming the first Pakistani to pioneer this feat in the world of action sports.”

Samar Khan is no stranger to breaking barriers in the sporting world. She gained global recognition as the first woman to cycle on the Biafo and Godwin Austen Glaciers in the Karakoram range of Gilgit Baltistan. Her daring spirit also led her to become the first Pakistani to cycle on Mount Kilimanjaro’s slopes in 2017.

Despite facing initial challenges and lack of recognition in her homeland, Samar’s perseverance and talent caught the attention of the ESPNW Global Sports Mentoring Program. Through this program, she received mentorship from top sports executives in the United States, including Burton Snowboards in Vermont, where she honed her snowboarding skills.

Inspired by her journey and determined to empower others, Samar founded ‘Samar Camp,’ an initiative offering sports camps focusing on mountain biking, backpacking, and snowboarding exclusively for girls and women in Pakistan. Her dedication to fostering a community of female adventurers has earned her accolades both at home and abroad.

In addition to her recent triumph on Mount Elbrus, Samar Khan has claimed victories in various competitions, including a silver medal in the Sadia Khan Championship in 2022 and winning the Red Bull Homerun snowboarding category in 2021.

She further solidified her legacy by summiting and snowboarding down an unclimbed peak in Shimshal, Gilgit Baltistan, an achievement that led to the mountain being named ‘Ghar e Samar’ (Samar’s Mountain in Pashto) in her honor.

Samar Khan continues to inspire with her daring expeditions and efforts to promote adventure sports among women in Pakistan, proving that with determination and courage, one can conquer any summit, both literal and figurative.
