Ukrainian forces thwart Russian missile attack on Kyiv

Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted a Russian missile attack on Kyiv early Sunday morning, following the activation of air raid sirens before dawn.

According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, this marks the third ballistic missile assault on the capital in August, with a consistent six-day interval between each attack.

In addition to the missile strike, drones were reported to be approaching Kyiv. The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed that all enemy drones were neutralized well outside the city limits.

The administration speculated that the ballistic missiles were likely of North Korean KN-23 type, although there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The US and South Korea have accused North Korea of supplying ammunition and missiles to Russia for its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In response, Kyiv has persistently urged its Western allies to bolster air defense support.

The previous weekend saw a tragic missile strike near Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of a 35-year-old man and his four-year-old son, with three others sustaining serious injuries.

Amid heightened tensions, Moscow has promised a “tough response” to recent Ukrainian advances into Russian territory. Kyiv’s forces launched a significant counter-offensive in the Kursk region last week, displacing over 120,000 people.

Ukraine claims to have reclaimed more than 1,100 square kilometers of Russian territory, marking the largest foreign military incursion into Russian soil since World War II.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that operations in Kursk are progressing as anticipated. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry reported the destruction of five Ukrainian drones over Belgorod, Kursk, and Rostov regions on Saturday night.
