Karachi University students protest for seventh day, demanding action

Karachi University students have staged protests for the seventh consecutive day, voicing their grievances over a range of issues affecting student life, including rising tuition fees.

The demonstrations, organized by the students’ union, commenced at the Administrative Block and have attracted support from various departments and student organizations across the campus.

In response to the ongoing unrest, several university administrative offices, canteens, and departments remain partially closed, and the operation of campus buses has been halted.

The protesters are calling for a 50% reduction in late fee charges, the immediate removal of examination fees, the abolition of the Rs5,000 re-admission fee, and urgent repairs to the university’s deteriorating buses and classroom facilities.

They have emphasized that they will continue their protests until their demands are addressed, highlighting ongoing concerns about high fees, inadequate facilities, and transportation issues.

Earlier in the protests, students alleged that Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi had suspended campus transport services, forcing students to seek alternative means to commute home. Student leaders have formally submitted their charter of demands to the Vice Chancellor.

After discussions between the students’ organization and university officials, it was announced that Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi had partially accepted some of the students’ demands.

However, students have expressed their determination to persist in their protests until all their concerns are fully addressed.
