As the 2024 US presidential election approaches, fans of The Simpsons are abuzz, speculating that the long-running show may have predicted Kamala Harris as the next president.
In the 2000 episode “Bart to the Future,” Lisa Simpson becomes president after Donald Trump, inheriting a financial crisis. Many fans point to Harris’s outfit at President Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration — a purple suit and pearls — remarkably similar to Lisa’s attire in the episode, suggesting a visual link between Harris and the show’s fictional first female president.
Social media users have shared images of Kamala Harris and Lisa side by side, with captions noting the show’s apparent accuracy in predicting political events. The Simpsons has previously “predicted” several events, including Trump’s 2016 presidential run, making this episode seem prophetic for some viewers.
Current polling reflects a tight race between Harris and Trump, with polling aggregator 270toWin showing Harris leading by a slim 0.7 percentage point margin. Some analysts, however, caution against reading too much into polls alone.
Polling expert Nate Silver has described the race as “too close to call” and hinted at a Trump victory, while other political strategists, such as James Carville and election historian Allan Lichtman, predict a Harris win.
Lichtman, who has accurately forecast every election since 1984 using his “13 keys” model, bases his predictions on historical trends rather than polls. Political strategist Carville also predicts a Democratic victory, citing the GOP’s electoral setbacks since 2018, Harris’s significant fundraising advantage, and his belief that the US electorate is less divided than polls suggest. Harris’s campaign has reportedly raised over $1 billion, a major advantage over Trump’s war chest.
As November 5 approaches, The Simpsons fans, pollsters, and political experts alike are watching closely to see if Kamala Harris will indeed make history, potentially fulfilling yet another of the show’s famed “predictions.”
